Today was our first day in First Grade! We were busy from the time we walked in the door until the final bell rang. It was an excited time getting to know all of my kids, playing games, doing projects, reading books, etc. Here are just a few of our activities....
We began the day with Morning Work, DNN, our lunch count, and of course, a class picture.
Look how cute those faces are!
After our Morning Meeting, we read the book, Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar. We reenacted the story with our own cookie jar and cookies with our names on them. It was a fun way to get in a little singing as we learned each others names.
We also read the story, David Goes to School. This lead to our discussion of classroom and school rules. We talked about the difference of being a Peacemaker and a Peacebreaker. The students were freely sharing their own ideas and the rules they had learned last year in Kindergarten. We are all going to be Peacemakers this year!
After sitting still for a while, it was time for a break with a class project! We made our own version of David from the story. Here we are working at our seats. You can tell we are happy and having fun!
When we were finished, all of our David's looked a little different. We talked about how that was okay since we are all different! Here are a few of the finished products. Stop by our hallway to see them on display.
We also read the book First Day Jitters today. It is about a teacher who is scared about going to her new school and meeting her new class. This book gave us a chance to discuss our own feelings about coming to school. Some of us were a little nervous, some were worried, but most of us were excited! We decided we might all need a little Jitter Juice to help us make it through the rest of the day!
One of my favorite things we did today was read the book The Crayon Box that Talked (it's one of my favorites). We wrote about our favorite colors, created a tally chart, discussed more, less, and same, and even did a ginormous addition problem! What a wonderful first day of learning we have had!
We had a few extra minutes this afternoon, so we read along with a CD to Pete the Cat, Rocking in My School Shoes. Have your child sing it to you, it's precious!
I have to be honest, I did not get as many first day pictures as I would have liked, but I did get the famous First Day of School pictures. Look at us now...we will grow up before your eyes this year!
I am sooo tired, but looking forward to another amazing day tomorrow. I guess it's time to go get ready. Thanks for sharing your alBRIGHT learners with me this year!

This is fabulous! Thank you for sharing this with us. I can tell "Sissy" Kaia is going to have a great 1st grade year! :)
