Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed!

In First Grade, we have been learning about folktales.  Our first tall tale was Johnny Appleseed.  We celebrated his birthday today, September 26th!  Our morning began with a labeling activity which is helping us learn about non-fiction text features.

Then, we read a story about Johnny Appleseed and created an anchor chart.

We wrote about Johnny Appleseed too!  Come stop by our hallway to see all of our amazing writings...this is just a sneak peak!

Our math today even focused around apples where we were adding parts to make a whole.  We were writing our number sentences horizontally and vertically - yes, we are very smart first graders!!!

When we had a break, during independent time, we were able to complete an Appleseed Art project...look how cute they turned out.

Finally, to make the celebration complete, we had a caramel apple treat!  A special thank you to Mrs. Albright's mom and dad for sending in one for each of us.  We really appreciated it...boy were they yummy!

We can't wait to find out who our next folktale character is!

Literacy Night

Last Thursday night was Literacy Night at St. Simons Elementary.  Children came to the classroom for a "Book Tasting" where they could wet their appetite with all types of books!  Some children enjoyed fiction and others non-fiction.  I think their favorite part was enjoying this activity with their parents.  Thanks to all who came and tasted the books.  If you were unable to come, the public library is a great place to go explore the different genres of books with your child.

Mrs. Albright is Missing!

For the past two weeks Mrs. Albright was home ill...just like in the storybook Miss Nelson is missing!  I am happy to report that I am back and ready for my first full week with my kiddo's this month!  I have started back slowly these past few days and they have been wonderful filled with hugs, love, and a lot of make up work!  Thank you parents for your patience, and children for your hard work and perseverance.  I am so proud of you!!!

Are You Ready for REWARD DAY?

On Friday, September 12, we will have our first Reward Day.  We will celebrate making good choices and being Respectful, Responsible, Role Models.  In order to participate, we have to earn at least 25 tickets.  We have been working with place value in Math so it only made sense to make a Math lesson out of our counting.  We counted our tickets into groups of tens and then the extras became the ones.  Look at our pictures below to see how we glued them into base ten sticks.  Here are the kids in our class who are already ready to attend...

A Full Day in First Grade

After the first few weeks , we are FINALLY on a schedule!  Our day begins with our Literacy Groups.  We rotate around the room in four small groups.
Mrs. Albright

and Mrs. Sloan

are each in charge of a group where we get our instructional level reading.

There are also two independent groups.
One group is doing Literacy Centers:

Listening,

Write the Room,

ELA Pocket Chart,

Writing,

and the Reading Tub.

The other group works on the computer.

The second part of our day is spent focusing on Writing.  Mrs. Albright models a lesson
and then we go back to our seats to do our own work.

Each day a different group gets pulled for conferencing.

Next, we go to Phonics groups.
Mrs. Albright's group focuses on our daily lesson,

an independent group works on grade level reading,

and a third group plays phonics games,
or completes their computer work.

Mid-morning it is time for a break...Brain Break that is!

When we come back inside we focus on Integrated Curriculum.  This week we are learning about our city, county, state, country, continent, and world.

After all that work, we get very hungry!
To the lunchroom we go...
Hopefully one day you can come and join us!!!

When we come back to the classroom we get out our Math Journals. We solve a word problem using pictures, numbers, and words.

Our whole group Math lesson comes next.  Today we are working on making sets that were more, less, and the same.

I think most of our favorite part of Math is when we break into Math Groups.
Mrs. Albright is always teaching us a new game,

While an independent group is working on a game we have already learned.

Our third group is spent on the computer,

or working on Flash Masters.

At the very end of the day we go to Specials.

We quickly come back, take our tags off, put our bookbags on, and get ready to go home.

We have had a wonderful day but are ready to see our family and take a break!
